Bronte Creek oil cleanup methods considered

The Bronte Creek spill is still causing issues for Oakville. Gasoline spilling out of the Trans-Northern Pipelines Inc. pipe into Bronte Creek was more serious than first believed. Containers were setup following the spill and an environmental cleanup was required by the Town of Oakville.

The initial spill occurred on March 11th. The Ministry of the Environment is requiring Trans-Northern to clean up and site and provide an assessment of the contamination. It is believed that it is more serious than first anticipated. The additional leak found on March 16th was probably a result of the March 11th spill.

It is now believed that the spill was able to travel faster and further by using an ancient river bed that served as a pathway.

Because of the delicate nature of Bronte Creek several options are being considered to cleanup the situations. Bio-remediation, meaning the subsurface and the ground water are inoculated with nutrient material that consumes hydrocarbon, are one of the options being investigated. Another options is using a chemical material that dissolves gasoline.

Cleanup could take a year or two. Trans-Northern plans to work closely with the Ministry of the Environment to ensure the cleanup is successful and that they remain a ‘good nighbour to Oakville.
