Oakville’s decision to raise development charges to the highest in the country have met with great opposition by developers. Four development companies are now appealing the decision to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB).
Mattamy Realty Limited, the Building Industry and Land Development (BILD) Association, Silgold Developments Inc., and Donmar Contraplan Inc., disagree with the recent rise in charges.
Donmar’s lawyer, Blair Taylor, stated that the rise in costs does not fit with the current economic climate.
The changes came into affect August 31st and saw a 63% increase for a single-family residential unitl. Non-residential development rose 34%.
Oakville argues that these increases were required in order to spare the taxpayer with the burden.
