Assault in Oakville reported wrong

Parents were notified that on February 11, shortly before 3:00 pm a 16 year old girl was walking alone in the area of Monk’s Passage and Monastery Drive when she observed a van driving slowly behind her. The van was being driven by a male. According to the report the girl noticed a different male walking behind her on the sidewalk. It was reported that the man had grabbed the female victim around the waist and pulled her close to him and that the victim was able to break free and run home and contact police.

On February 12, the victim was re-interviewed by police. During the interview investigators learned that although the victim did feel she was being followed by a suspicious van, and did fear for her safety, she was not actually grabbed by a male suspect.

Furthermore, investigators canvassed the area where the incident had taken place and were able to locate the suspicious van in question. The driver of the van was interviewed by police. The male had an appointment at a home in the area to carry out some renovations. The driver was driving slowly as he was looking for the address in question. He recalled to investigators seeing the teenage girl and worried his slow driving had accidentally scared her. Investigators are confident this male was in the area for legitimate purposes and he had no criminal or inappropriate intentions in relation to the teenage girl.
