Oakville’s lighting strategy is still under review with a meeting not scheduled now until January 2010.
Existing sports field lighting is the area specifically being reviewed. With much public outcry recently in the community about lighting installed on fields and its impact to residents, many await the outcome of this review.
The lack of technical information and measurements of light pollution seem to be a concern. Mayor Burton is asking Town staff to identify options for reducing the amount of light trespassing on residential areas from existing lit playing fields when an upgrade is being considered.
Although some residents are opposed to installing additional lighting, some community groups say the lights extend the playing time on fields, giving community groups much-needed field space. For example, the Oakville Soccer Club (with 9,000 members) has a desperate demand for fields.
