Halton Catholic School Board – are they discriminating

Once again decisions made in Halton regarding education are hitting the national media. Good to see the media is keeping our elected trustees accountable for their decisions, biases and recommendations. This time, it is the Halton Catholic School Board under the radar after discriminating decisions were passed and outrageous statements made (later recanted) by the board chairperson.

So you may be asking what is the latest uproar about. It is the issue being voted on to not allow gay-straight alliance groups. The Halton District Catholic School Board’s ban on the gay rights groups was added to the board’s Equity and Inclusive Education policy during one of the final meetings before a newly elected board took over.

Let me mention that the media coverage on this is hitting all media (newspapers, internet and radio). This coverage is not (by the way) just Canadian. Apparently even US media are voicing their disgust. No one likes discrimination especially when tax dollars are funding the system. [Read more...]

Halton Public School Board picks all day kindergarten schools

The Halton District School Board has submitted the list of schools it recommends having the all day kindgarten program in Oakville. Final approval must be obtained but at least parents of the affected schools know they are on the list.

All Halton parents need to complete the Secondary Program Survey

The Halton District School Board (HDSB) sent out a request to parents to complete a Secondary Program Survey. The survey stated that with three new secondary schools being built, HDSB wanted to determine parents’ thoughts on whether new schools should be community schools or regional program schools. The timing of the survey, scope of who was being notified about it and limited response time outraged many parents. We heard from many in the community. [Read more...]
